Today, Sept. 5, was chosen to celebrate the riches and alert to the importance of the Amazon Rainforest preservation.
Recognized for being the largest tropical forest on Earth, the Amazon Rainforest plays a key role in preventing the advance of climate change worldwide. One of them, for example, is to be largely responsible for the rain distribution in Latin America. The capacity to maintain the humidity throughout the East and South parts of the continent is primordial to balance the climate in this region and to stem the spread of global warming.
However, everything it represents, including its role in climate regulation, is constantly threatened by deforestation and soil degradation. For these reasons, initiatives that value the standing forest are of such great importance and have been increasingly encouraged by people and companies concerned about our planet.
As we explained in the first post of the series, conserving its biodiversity is a challenge that evolves environmental, social and economic contexts. For this reason, the REDD+¹ Projects has been proving efficient as a mechanism.
A practical example of benefits for Amazonia are the Jari Valley REDD+ Project activities, which has been providing the carbon credits for the offsetting of Norsul’s maritime fleet in 2020:
Norsul is also dedicated to being an agent of change in Amazonia and climate: in addition to purchasing the REDD+ carbon offsets to neutralize 100% of the emissions of your merchant fleet, the Company participates in the Voluntary Observing Ship Program, one of the World Meteorological Organization’s main programs that collects, records and transmits weather observations.
The vessel Juruti, a name that honors the city of Pará, travels on the Amazon River and is an intelligent weather station that records and transmits real-time data to Weather Forecast Centers. This information, in addition to alerts for sailors, has become a source for research on patterns and climate change, contributing to global studies on the subject.
“For us every day is dedicated to the Amazon. It has been four decades that NORSUL is present in the Amazon providing logistics services to the region, always seeking to improve its processes, analyzing and mitigating impacts, and working to act more broadly and humanly, nothing motivate us more than to help in the conservation of this heritage of the Earth.”
