RESEX JACUNDÁ
REDD+ PROJECT

The Extractivist Reserve (RESEX) Rio Preto-Jacundá is a state conservation unit created in the 90s for traditional populations of rubber origin. Located in the municipality of Machadinho D’Oeste, state of Rondônia, it has an area of 95,300 thousand hectares.

The Jacundá REDD+ Project focuses on investing in improving the quality of life of communities and monitoring forest cover and biodiversity. The RESEX is in a region of great pressure for the predatory exploitation of natural resources and suffers from a lack of basic public services. In this context, residents found in the commercialization of environmental services a solution for the social development and conservation of the forests of their territory

LOCATION AND
IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

The RESEX Jacundá REDD+ Project is located in a state conservation unit, of the extractive reserve type (RESEX), situated in the northeast of the state of Rondônia, between the municipalities of Machadinho D’Oeste and Cujubim.

The creation of the RESEX in 1996, by State Decree 7.336, was supported by a history of struggle for the rights of the community members. In this context, the main objectives of the project for the communities are to increase local empowerment and to improve the quality of life, in several aspects, of a population that seeks the reward for being, as they call themselves, “forest guardians”.

OUR CERTIFICATIONS

The RESEX Jacundá REDD+ Project is validated and verified by the main international standards for certification of forest projects:

Biodiversity

The RESEX Jacundá REDD+ Project area has a very important role in biodiversity conservation, since it is in the “Center of Endemism Rondônia”, considered as one of the most important areas of bird endemism in South America. In addition, the Project Area has the occurrence of globally threatened species according to the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species that are protected thanks to the preservation of the area.

Community

The activities carried out by the project have as their main objective to strengthen the extractive and associative culture, reducing the population exodus. Therefore, all project activities are open and encouraged for the participation of all RESEX residents, especially women and young people.

Deforestation

Complementing the remote monitoring of deforestation using high-resolution satellite images, the project will develop sustainable practices, such as extractivism and sustainable forest management, reducing the occurrence of illegal activities by communities and strengthening and protecting the governance of the conservation unit.

Co-Benefits

The RESEX JACUNDÁ REDD+ Project contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations

The project makes feasible and encourages access to education by means of technical and professionalizing courses focused on the areas of financial and administrative management and social organization, besides having implemented an educational center for young people and adults, allowing access to training that enables better employment conditions and income diversification.

All project activities are open and encouraged for the participation of all residents of the active communities, especially women and young people. The project has a Life Plan, where the activities promote the empowerment of women in the decision-making process of the residents’ association (ASMOREX).

The installation of 9 photovoltaic panels has guaranteed the increase of renewable energy participation in the Project Area, enabling the distribution of clean and sustainable energy to families in the RESEX, even in the most remote areas. Thus, with both conventional and alternative energy systems, 100% of the local communities have access to energy.

The project worked on improving the local infrastructure through the construction and implementation of a youth and adult education center, a community center, and an outpatient clinic, as well as increasing access to technology and information through the acquisition of computer equipment and the construction of an internet tower.

The Project has a Multiple Use Management Plan, which encourages the responsible exploitation of natural resources, low carbon agriculture, and the recovery of degraded areas, allied to socioeconomic development. The project worked on the dissemination of knowledge, training, and capacity building focused on the efficient use of natural resources.

The activities developed by the project are focused on sustainable practices in the RESEX, valuing cultural diversity, and contributing to reducing the occurrence of deforestation by the community. As a main result, there was a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases, collaborating directly with the Brazilian goal of reducing emissions.

The project area is extremely important for the permanence of natural environments inside and outside its boundaries, besides promoting the conservation of biodiversity, ensuring the maintenance of ecosystem services. It is important to highlight that the traditional ways of life of the residents help to preserve the quality of the area.
