Fire Campaign in the Jari Amapá REDD+ Project

2026 Fire Campaign: guidance and dialogue in the territory

Fire management is part of the work of monitoring the territory. During the dry season, attention to the risks associated with the use of fire is reinforced, especially in regions where burning is part of traditional agricultural management practices.

In 2026, the environmental monitoring team of the Jari Amapá REDD+ Project carried out the 2026 Fire Campaign in the 13 target communities of the project.

The initiative provided information on responsible fire use, health and safety precautions, as well as contact channels that can be activated in emergency situations.

Guidance and dialogue with communities

The visits were carried out by the environmental monitoring team, which was present in the field to talk with residents and farmers.

During the meetings, guidance was provided on the necessary precautions before, during and after the use of fire, as well as contact information for the teams responsible for providing support and monitoring situations that require assistance.

The campaign takes into account the reality of the territory and the use of fire as a practice that is part of agricultural management in the region. In this context, dialogue with communities is an important part of the work carried out during the period of higher fire risk.

Health and safety

Smoke from fires can affect health, causing coughing, eye irritation and difficulty breathing. Children, older adults and pregnant women are among those who may experience greater impacts.

These precautions were part of the guidance shared during the campaign, reinforcing the importance of reducing exposure to smoke and adopting safety measures when using fire.

Safety when using fire

The campaign also reinforced safety precautions before, during and after burning.

The guidance included preparing the area, creating firebreaks, paying attention to wind conditions and continuously monitoring the burn until the fire is completely extinguished.

The guidance is clear: only use fire as a last resort. If you do, never do it alone.

Communication in the territory

In addition to in-person activities, the 2026 Fire Campaign used other communication channels to expand the reach of the guidance. Posters were placed in community gathering points and radio announcements helped reach different audiences, reinforcing the campaign’s messages during the dry season.

“Fale Conosco” communication boxes

The campaign also contributed to strengthening communication and community participation across the project’s 13 communities.

In addition to the team’s presence, telephone contacts and email, the “Fale Conosco” (“Talk to Us”) communication boxes, previously available at the office and during team visits, are being decentralized and permanently installed in the communities. Through these boxes, residents and other stakeholders can submit complaints, criticisms, questions, requests and suggestions, either identified or anonymously.

The installation of the boxes expands direct access to the project and facilitates the submission of requests, without relying on intermediaries or other communication channels. During the 2026 Fire Campaign workshops, the locations for installation and the person responsible for each box were agreed upon with participants. The boxes are opened monthly, in the presence of at least one community member. The submissions received are forwarded to the social team and the project for registration, analysis and response and, when applicable, for the incorporation of improvements into the implementation of the project’s actions.

The initiative strengthens ongoing consultation, transparency and community participation in the implementation and decision-making processes related to the project.

Fire management as part of the work in the territory

The 2026 Fire Campaign is part of the ongoing environmental monitoring work carried out in the Jari Amapá REDD+ Project. Field presence makes it possible to monitor the territory, maintain dialogue with communities and reinforce care related to the use of fire during periods of higher risk.

It is part of forest conservation work that takes place directly in the territory, connecting environmental monitoring, communication and an ongoing relationship with communities.
