In order to conduct this study, a partnership was formed by three complementary companies: Biofílica (acting as project leader), Prospectiva and Nascimento e Mourão.
The scope of the study evaluated the use of biodiversity in the private sector in Brazil, through economic and regulatory analyses. The production chains and the use of biodiversity were analysed in six sectors: energy from biomass, fibers, food, chemicals, pharmaceutical and cosmetics.
From a regulatory point of view, the study analysed national legislation to identify its major vices and virtues. Then it assessed the foreign law on the subject and compared this law with national law to identify possible legislative innovations to encourage the use of biodiversity and benefit-sharing. It also considered the relationship between national legislation and existing international treaties on the subject.
